“Studies in Color” an exhibit of art quilts by Chris Zurbuchen. This form of fiber art deviates from traditional, historical quilt patterns with an emphasis on design often with abstract or abstract-inspired pieces. Chris joined Miami Valley Art Quilt Network (MVAQN.COM) when she retired in 2012. MVAQN has monthly meetings studying different art quilt topics. In February 2025, she led the group on a study of Complementary Colors, which resulted in YS Water Towers as a study. Another color study is of trees in wooden frames.
Two quilt books, both available at YS library, inspired these studies. Both authors use a minimalist approach to their quilt designs. “Quilt Local” by Heather Jones (Dayton Author), uses subtle and simple designs taking inspiration from the ordinary. Therefore the local inspiration of YS Water Towers! “Modern Landscape Quilts” by Donna McLeod offers modern, easy-to-follow patterns and ideas. All the fabric used (with the exception of “Dog Park”) was from Chris’ personal stash of fabrics. Still have a closet full!
Her mother taught Chris to sew and that was reinforced with high school home econimics and 4-H. Work life took over the little time for sewing until retirement. A 2012 Christmas gift of a Singer sewing machine from her daughter helped with her new projects. She is also a member of the Miami Valley Quilters Guild (mvqgohio.com)
“The joy and fun of playing with fabric, translating an idea into a finished project, is my reward!”
