About the Artist
Helen learned to sew on her mother’s treadle machine in the 1950’s. Later in high school Home Economics she learned to use an electric machine. From the beginning, she enjoyed working with fabric — looking at it, feeling it and making things with it. For her, it has always been a tactile activity.
Making quilts for family and friends was the first order of business. From baby quilts, T-shirt quilts, bed quilts and wall hangings, she did it all. Then she started branching out to art quilts.
As an artist, Helen uses quilts to communicate about her topic. Each quilt has a story to tell. In the past 2 years, she has completed several quilts highlighting the Oregon District of Dayton where a tragic mass shooting took place ion August 4, 2019. Also she has completed a series of quilts honoring the 20th Anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers. These quilts, along with those of her friends, were displayed at Woodbourne Library in 2021.

Researching an event, place or person helps me visualize how I will design a quilt to celebrate or memorialize the topic.
